What classes do you teach at Defensive TRIAD?
Defensive TRIAD teaches both armed and unarmed instruction. While we understand that firearms are a force equalizer and necessary component of defense against a violent encounter, we also understand that the ability to carry a firearm is not always possible, or practical. While our instructors teach courses in firearm safety, defensive handgun tactics from novice to advanced, team tactics, advanced concealed carry tactics, home defense and vehicle defense, they also teach unarmed defense, edged weapons, weapons of opportunity and multiple opponent defense tactics. We also teach advanced courses including force on force training which attempt to place our advanced students into realistic scenarios to better prepare you for the worst moments of your life.
Who can take classes at Defensive TRIAD?
While we specialize in teaching civilians, we have many law enforcement and military personnel that take our courses. We do private and group classes and will travel to your organization to perform instruction for your personnel. The majority of our instruction is geared toward average American citizens that are looking to better there knowledge of self defense with the use of firearms, edged weapons and unarmed defense against single and multiple attackers. We understand that our society is, unfortunately, currently experiencing a disruption in civilized social behaviors and we recognize the need of ordinary people to better defend themselves and their families against this threat.
Are there any pre-requisites to your classes?
We teach a myriad of beginning and intermediate defensive courses. Our advance courses however require an advanced understanding of the fundamentals that are covered in these courses. Therefore, most advanced courses require successful completion with a passing score of 90% or greater on the skills test for the armed and unarmed courses. In regards to our firearms courses, this is presented in the Defensive Handgun Intermediate course and in regards to our unarmed courses, this is presented in the Self Defense I course. Successful completion with 90% or greater will grant our students access to our advanced courses.
What should I bring to class?
Prior to your arrival in class, you will receive and email for your specific course that have information regarding equipment recommendations and requirements. However, as an example of what might be expected...our beginning and intermediate firearms courses require the following:
A center fire semi-automatic or revolver handgun (caliber .30 or greater)
3 Magazines
Outside or inside the waistband holster, firm material such as kydex to allow a one-handed re-holster, positioned on the firing side of the body at the belt level
A magazine carrier for at least two of your magazines, positioned on the support side of the belt is strongly recommended.
A firm belt that will support your holster and firearm with minimal movement while drawing your firearm from the holster
150 rounds of ammunition minimum
Electronic ear protection
Clear eye protection
Why do I have to pass the Skills Test with such a high score in order to take your advanced classes for firearms?
Our advanced courses are dynamic courses of fire that place the student in situations and scenarios that require mental clarity, fast action and significant emphasis on muzzle awareness. We have found that students that are unable to pass the Skills Test with a score of 90% or greater, do not have enough practice and fundamental awareness of firearm skill to properly manipulate a firearm in a safe manner while also addressing the needs of their surrounding situation. These situations may include personal protection of a loved one, communicating with support personnel and victims as well as evaluation of a threat while maintaining situational awareness and are covered in depth in our advanced courses.
I have a CCW and don’t carry my gun in a "strong side, outside the waistband" fashion. Shouldn’t I practice your class in the same manner that I currently carry my firearm?
We are firm believers in practicing your firearm instruction in the same manner in which you intend to carry. However, for our beginning and intermediate courses, we recommend a strong side carry (inside or outside the waistband) as this is the fastest and most easily repeatable position of the firearm. Once the student has demonstrated an adequate fundamental understanding of drawing and shooting from this position, then we recommend utilizing your preferred carry method as you advance through our advance courses.
Why are some of the classes only 4 hours in length?
We have found that students learn better and have greater long term retention of skills if they are able to learn small packets of information and then practice that information at home, prior to returning for additional instruction. Our classes are packed full of so much information, that we find it better if students have time to process the information before moving forward with more advanced material. The 4 hours of instruction requires days, weeks or months of practice to fully ingrain the information and allow you to process new information. We do offer some all day courses, but we find that, in general, people receive a greater benefit to shorter, more frequent classes that are compressed to allow digestion of information and practice of skills.
What can I do to prepare for your class?
Understand your firearm, read your manual, know it’s anatomy and have a general awareness of safety. While we do cover these topics, every firearm is different and the more educated about your firearm and it’s operation, the greater your understanding of the techniques that we will be teaching in class. Also, get a good nights sleep the day before class and come ready to learn.
Do you teach people how to clean their firearm?
We do not cover instruction on cleaning or maintenance of firearms in our defensive series of courses. Our instructors would be happy to work with you on this information on an individual basis at an additional cost for their time.
I took your Defensive Handgun 1 course, but don’t think I am ready to take the Intermediate course and test my skills yet. Can I re-take the Defensive Handgun I class again?
Absolutely, many people find that by retaking the same class over and over, they retain more information and become aware of information that they missed during the first time around.
I think I have what it takes to become a firearms instructor. Are you hiring instructors?
We have many opportunities within our organization, some are paid and some are unpaid positions, depending on your level of responsibility and ability.
